Songbird 1.0 flies
Open source media browser and player Songbird this week finally announced the release of version 1.0.
First announced in 2005, the Songbird player is a Mozilla-based browser and player that runs on most popular desktop platforms.
Although the player interface hasn’t changed a great deal since earlier test releases, there are a number of new feautures now included in the package. Among these are the use of GStreamer as the primary playback on all systems which improves audio preformance.
Songbird supports MP3, FLAC, and Vorbis on all platforms, WMA on Windows and AAC on Windows and Mac.
Improvements specific to this release, the development team says, include faster media importing, faster search, better start times and reduced memory usage.
